In the design of this villa, which was built for the Barbaro brothers at the beginning of the 1550s, Palladio adopted an arrangement for the first time, whereby the house and barchesse would be aligned in such a manner as to form a compact architectural unit. In the construction of the villa, Palladio expressed his considerable skill: he succeeded in transforming a pre-existing house, joining it to the rectilinear barchesse and excavated the adjacent hillside to form a nymphaeum with a fishpond, from which, by means of an elaborate hydraulic system, water was drawn into the service areas of the villa and then conveyed towards the ornamental garden and kitchen garden.
